The Best Thing About the Internet

What would we do without the internet? As I write this, I am sitting at my friend’s desk in her house on Moloka’i, a small island of Hawaii. If she didn’t have internet, I would probably be staring at the walls pondering the workings of the Universe just like Einstein or reading one of the many books that my friend has. Thank Goodness she has internet, though. It made me think about how any of us got by without it.

The best thing about the internet is that we now have become savvy shoppers. Just think, not too long ago we had to get in our cars and go somewhere or call around on the phone to do any shopping. Nowadays we can just shop from the comfort of our home - groceries, car insurance quotes, furniture - pretty much anything can be bought online today. We have so many choices of where to shop, and In a matter of a few clicks, we can find the best deal. As for businesses, they’re now forced to compete by price, offer exceptional customer service, or both.

As for me, I remember all too clearly when I would browse through a JCPenney catalogue at home to do my shopping. I would create a wishlist of what I wanted and then beg my mom to order it for me or buy it in the store. I now think how fortunate I am to even have the luxury of being to able to have a computer to go online and do all of my shopping.

Yes, being on a semi-remote island isn’t too bad when you have the internet. I was going to try and go without it for a few days, but as you can see, that didn’t work out so well. I’m by myself with a cat named Anakin, a few chickens in the backyard, a gecko who apparently likes to hang out on the wall by this desk....oh, and Facebook.

What do you think is the best thing about the internet? What would you be doing without it?
