10 Things Highly Successful People Don’t Do

Did you know that success at anything in life is not just about what you do, but it’s also about what you don’t do? Highly successful people develop great habits that enable them to achieve their goals.

In my 15 years as an entrepreneur I’ve studied hundreds of successful CEO's and interviewed dozens of entrepreneurs. I’ve always been fascinated with their mindset and what exactly makes them more successful than other people. How do people like Oprah or Richard Branson go from nothing to making billions of dollars? Also, what habits do they avoid? Here are 10 things I’ve observed:

Highly successful people don’t dwell on mistakes. Successful people know that life is a journey. Part of that journey is making mistakes, learning the lessons from those mistakes, and moving on. We don’t grow if we don’t make mistakes and learn.

They don’t gossip. Successful people are too busy to waste time talking about people who don’t matter in their lives. Gossiping about other people isn’t productive and doesn’t help them in the big picture of life.

They don’t blame other people. If there is a problem or mistakes are made, successful people take responsibility for any actions that contributed to the issue. Instead of sitting around blaming other people, successful people find ways to move forward.

They don’t say “Yes” to every opportunity. Successful people naturally attract plenty of money-making opportunities and ways to contribute to the world. The problem with saying “Yes” to all those opportunities is that it takes away energy from the most important priorities. Successful people understand that saying “No” is OK because that opens them up to focusing on those things that are more meaningful.

They don’t focus on the negative. Highly successful people know how to see the silver lining of every situation. They don’t overreact to negative events that happen to them.

They don’t watch alot of TV. Television can be a time-sucker and too much of it can take away from time better spent working on their business or having quality time with loved-ones.

They don’t stress out. Successful people know how to find balance in their life and manage their time so they don’t become overwhelmed. They know that regular exercise and extracurricular activities can help them relax and unwind so they have the energy to be more productive.

They don’t fill their bodies with junk food. Food can provide energy and vitality, but it can also weigh you down. Successful people understand that they have to maintain a healthy diet in order to keep their minds sharp and their bodies energized.

They don’t take credit for everything. Successful people understand that it takes a team to produce anything worthwhile. Even if they are solo entrepreneurs or work by themselves most of the time, they know that everyone they interact with including their friends and family contribute to their success.

They don’t take anything for granted. The most prosperous and abundant people never take anything or anyone for granted. They are grateful for all the success that comes their way and take time out to show their gratitude.

Becoming a successful person requires diligence and work. A successful life includes developing high standards for yourself and to continuously work on your personal development. Success is not just about being wealthy and reaching all your goals, it’s also being the best version of you that you can be.

Is there anything you would add to this list?
