What Freelancing Has Taught Me About Life

What Freelancing Has Taught Me About Life

Taking the leap of faith to become a freelance writer eighteen years ago was the scariest, yet most exciting decision I made. It’s been a dream come true to be able to do something I absolutely love and get paid for it. The journey has been up and down, but I wouldn’t change it for the world.

Freelance writing has taught me important lessons about life including:

You have to go after what you want with unwavering confidence.

With the advent of social media and content marketing, there are a plethora of writing opportunities available now. Likewise, there are many writers competing for all these opportunities. As a freelancer, I have had to be extremely persistent in going after the opportunities that resonate with me. I have to remind myself that I am a talented writer who has the skills to connect with readers and make a difference in people’s lives.

Every “no” is one step closer to a “yes”.

Rejection is a part of life and I’ve gone through a ton of if as a freelancer. I’ve learned to not take the rejection personally. I view it as if the opportunity just wasn’t meant to be and that I’m taking the steps to get closer to that one opportunity that truly works for me.

Maintaining a positive attitude is one of the greatest keys to success.

I’ve been very fortunate to have many clients who have been positive and enjoyable to work with, which has made it easy to maintain a positive mindset.

Being positive, though, has definitely worked in my favor when coming up with ideas and being in the flow of writing. The words come much easier and my creativity is at its peak when my energy is more positive. A positive attitude has also helped me connect with other like-minded people, which in turn has opened up the doors to more writing opportunities.

Being resilient will get you far in life.

My own experience as a freelancer has been a roller coaster ride with many highs, but many lows as well. There have been times that I didn’t have any work coming in, but I pushed forward and still believed in myself. I remember a time when I was barely scraping by and was even tempted to get a full time job, but I just couldn’t bring myself to work for someone else. I couldn’t wake up every day to go to a job and put my writing to the side. I’ve been spoiled with the freedom that a freelance lifestyle has given me. I couldn’t compromise what I believe is my purpose in this life, which is to write.

When I did go through challenging times I just reminded myself that it was just temporary. I remained headstrong and maintained the positive mindset that has been my calling card to get me through all the challenges.

Most of all, freelancing has taught me that life is indeed unpredictable, but I have the power to truly live my dream as a writer, co-create my destiny, and create an impact in the world through my writing.
